славивших российский флот в

с освоением Аляски. Большая часть
русских географических исследова
ний, произведённых в первую половину
XIX столетия, определялась нуждами
Российско-Американской компа
нии, с которой так или иначе
связана организация всех
крупных плаваний в Тихом
океане. Помимо выяснения
навигационной обстановки
в его водах, особенно при

ticed, and in April, 1802 he
was promoted to the rank of

ing the right to hereditary
nobility. From the mo
ment of the organiza
tion in 1799 up to 1827
he was in charge of the

the organization of some
the round-the-world sail
ings which glorified the
Russian fleet in the first
quarter of a XIX century,
participated
in
many
works connected with de
velopment of Alaska. The
great part of the Russian
geographical researches made
in first half XIX of century, was
defined by needs of the Russian-
American company with which
was integrated part of all great
sailings in the Pacific Ocean. Be
sides finding-out of conditions
for navigating in its waters, es
pecially coastal, the necessity of
equipment for the ships for long
voyages were dictated also by
purely economic reasons. The
company management fairly be
lieved that supply of trade sta
tions in the Russian America
will be cheaper by the cost of
expenses, and faster on time
by sea, than to carry provi
sions and the goods necessary
for a work to Alaska through
all Siberia using the horse-
vehicles and horses, and then
from Okhotsk, across the Pa
cific ocean using not numerous,
