THE FIRST DISCOVERY OF THE
NORTHWEST OF AMERICA

According to Tsar’s orders, The Siberian warlords should
provide regular entry into the state treasury so called «soft
stuff». It was known as furs in XVII century and, first gf all,a
sable fur. In Siberia, the sable came into treasury from Rus
sian field men-hunters and from the non-Russian population
who paid off tribute in furs. Field men brought the fur sable
on the basis of 1/10 parts out of the whole procure during the
hunting furs.
The non-Russian population paid the tax - tribute, paid off
in furs. All sables, received in Siberia, were sent to Moscow.
The sable treasury has been waited with the big impatience.
The sable was one of important assets of the state incomes
and the expenditure. It was highly appreciated in the markets
of West European and east countries. The sables have been
presented to the kings of the foreign states and their ambas
sadors, encouraged for a faithful service of boyars and noble
men and even paid off with clergy for prayers about long-term
health of a sovereign and his family.
Research of rich fur areas and the further annexation of the
non-Russian population which have not yet been paid off trib
ute in furs were means of increase in receipting of a sable.
In June, 1727 from Petersburg by the decision of the Senate
for «an appeal in citizenship» Koryaks and Chukchi, survey
and-annexation to Russian possession of the new lands in
Pacific ocean the expedition headed by Yakut Cossack (Colo
nel) Afanasiy Fedotovich Shestakov had off. In Tobolsk he was
adjoined by geodesist Mikhail Spiridonovich Gvozdev, junior
ship’s master Ivan Fyodorov and Captain Dmitry Ivanovic Pav-
lutskiy w ith group of 400 cossacks. Actually, Pavlutskiy has
one more task, much more important for the government:
to punish «unpacific» inhabitants of Chukotka, who plun
dered warehouses with the goods and furs and assaulted on
«peaceful» Chukchi, de facto subjected to the Russian tsar.
In 1729 the expedition arrived to the Ohotskiy town. Where
from in the autumn of the same year Shestakov and his people
using two ships have passed to the Tajskajabay by sea and in
the end of November have directed to the northeast. On May,
14th, 1730 not far from the entry of the Penzhina River, dur
ing one of confrontations with groups of «unpacific» Chukchi,
A. Shestakov was lost, and, in addition, one ship was burnt
by koryaks. Dmitry Pavlutsky became Shestakov’s successor.
After two wintering on Kamchatka in Bolsheretsk and Nizh-
nekamchatsk expedition on the escaped boat «St. Gabriel»
(on it in 1728 Vitus Bering floated), has gone on July, 23rd,
1732 on «Continent» inspection.
Geodesist Mikhail Gvozdev supervised over a campaign,
Ivan Fyodorov was the navigator. On August, 15th the boat
has entered into Bering Strait. Gvozdev landed on the Asian
coast of strait and on Diomede Islands, having finished their
opening. On August, 21st «St. Gabriel» with a fair wind has
approached to «Continent» - to cape Prince of Wales, the
northwest extremity of America.
At the coast, the seamen saw inhabited yurtas, the coast
of the newly opened country were covered with forest: «The
