Shri Gopal Bhattacharjee
Born in 1936, in a village of East Bengal in In-
dia, Sri Gopal Bhattacharjee had his early education in
the University of Gauhati, in Assam. At the age of 19,
in 1956, on seeing a book with Sri Aurobindo's picture
on the cover at a railway station in Assam, he was ins-
pired to meet The Mother in Pondicherry He met Her on
16th October, 1956, and immediately on return, opened a
Centre in Digboi, Assam, where he was engaged as an
apprentice. The same year, with The Mother's blessings,
he left for England to pursue higher training in engi-
neering. While in England, he maintained contact with
the Mother through personal letters.
In 1972, he organised Sri Aurobindo's Birth Cente-
nary celebrations in different states of India, and
opened many Centres. After that, as Joint Secretary of
the Society, he has travelled abroad and visited more
than 120 countries in order to spread the teachings of
Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, and to let the people of
the world know of Sri Aurobindo's integral Yoga. His
articles and interviews have been published by the na-
tional dailies in different countries, including the
U.K. and the U.S.A. He has also given talks on radio,
and has appeared for interviews in many countries.
Sri Aurobindo Society is a consultative member of
UNESCO. Mr Bhattacharjee has represented the Society at
the UNESCO Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations
at Paris many times. At the 22nd Annual Conference in
Paris in 1990, he was elected, by an overwhelming majo-
rity, a member of the UNESCO Executive Committee in Ca-
tegory B of NGO.
