This dissertation argues that Russian women's autobiographical writing constitutes a distinct tradition distinguished by its pervasive privileging of others over the self. This study traces the poetics of the relationship between self and other in Russian women's autobiography, speculates on the reasons for this other-focus, and explores chronological and thematic patterns within this tradition of Russian women's literature. The dissertation covers works written between 1767 and the early 1990s and includes the genres of autobiography, memoir, journal/diary, autobiographical sketch, and quasi-autobiographical poem and novella. Individual chapters analyze works grouped according to the type of other person at their center: a biological or surrogate parent (childhood reminiscences by Marina Tsvetaeva, Nadezhda Durova, Sof'ia Kovalevskaia, and Lidiia Chukovskaia); a biological sister (works by Kovalevskaia and Marina and Anastasiia Tsvetaeva); a female friend (memoirs by Ekaterina Dashkova, Chukovskaia, and Nadezdha Mandel'stam); a female collective in prison lines or labor camps (Anna Akhmatova's "Requiem" and Irina Ratushinskaia's prison- camp memoir); a husband (memoirs by Dolgorukaia, the Decembrist wives including Mariia Volkonskaia, Liubov' Blok, and Nadezhda Mandel'stam); and real or fictional other selves (in works by Durova, Lidiia Cinzburg, Karolina Pavlova, Akhmatova, and Chukovskaia). Besides close analyses of these authors, the thesis briefly discusses works by Catherine the Great, Bashkirtseva, Figner, Gippius, Parnok, Kollontai, Evgeniia Ginzburg, and others. My study complements feminist theory concerning women's strategies of self-definition in relation to others in autobiography. I suggest that through their foregrounding of others, Russian women conform to patriarchal-cultural prescriptions for them as cultural conservators. Simultaneously, they resist proscriptions on a concern with the self that derive from Russian Orthodoxy and other social institutions. They camouflage powerful self-representations behind the privileged figure of an other in autobiographical genres that have been relatively accessible to women writers within Russia's patriarchal literacy culture. Detailed attention is given to the eight principal symbolists, namely Konstantin Bal'mont, Andrei Belyi, Aleksandr Blok, Valerii Briusov, Zinaida Gippius, Viacheslav Ivanov, Dmitrii Merezhkovskii and Fedor Sologub. The study concentrates on their reactions to the historical events of the period, on their image of Russia, its allies and enemies, and also on their concepts of the role of art in time of crisis. The great cataclysms were conceived as events which could foster a new consciousness and sociality. The military struggle between Russia and Germany was seen as a conflict between spirituality and materialism. The claim to Russian exclusiveness was based upon the existence of a national sense of an organic collectivism, a Christian sociality. The February revolution was also interpreted in religious terms. The military disasters, however, fostered a more realistic view of Russia's situation and brought forth patriotic sentiments. The October revolution represented for the majority the coming of the Antichrist, while Blok, Belyi and Briusov tried to apply the notion of transfiguration to the victory of the Bolsheviks. The World War and the 1917 revolutions presented an aesthetic problem for the symbolists, as the events posed the choice between art and civic duty. For the majority the reality of war and revolution lay outside their concept of art, and they reacted through journalism or an outward silence. Faithful to his concept of symbolism Sologub strove to create myths that would become real through their artistic power. The Russian symbolists claimed to possess a special feeling for the future. They had sensed the looming approach of war and revolution on a general level, yet none of them grasped the essence of those events. The new order materialized in a way which symbolist thinking could not apprehend. This was another indicator of the fact that symbolism was drawing to a close as an important chapter in the history of Russian literature. Gippius extended the boundaries of the practice of life-creation by constructing various contradictory gendered identities in her life and art. She simultaneously invited and frustrated the attempts of her contemporaries to read her, calling into question the stability of identity itself. The first chapter is devoted to an analysis of the role of feminine fashion in Gippius' poetic mythology. In spite of her preference for a masculine poetic voice, Gippius fashioned herself in an overtly feminine manner. She not only flaunted her feminine clothing and hairstyles in the salon, but she called attention to the feminine style of her writing in her letters. She parodied or "mimicked," in Luce Irigaray's terms, the fin-de-siecle obsession with viewing the female poet as inherently feminine and fashionable. The second chapter moves from an examination of Gippius' femininity to a study of her androgyny. Gippius responded to her religious and philosophical interests in androgyny by styling herself at times as the sexually ambiguous figure of the dandy. In addition to appropriating the dandy's attire and gestures, she assumed a dandified posture in her early love lyrics and her diary of love affairs, Contes d'amour. The final chapter discusses how Gippius' tendency to vacillate between gender roles raised questions among her contemporaries about the nature of her sex. While some critics have intimated that Gippius' proclivity for assuming various gendered identities was the result of a physical abnormality, this study argues that it was part of a self-conscious aesthetic act. Gippius intentionally created an elusive, unreadable text of her body to enact in her person the indeterminacy central to Symbolist poetics. She laid bare this fact in her final unfinished poem, The Last Circle or the Modern Dante in Hell, which stages the difficulty that the critic encounters in reading her as a gendered body. For the writers interested in the history of religion and dogma Vladimir Solov'ev's teaching of esoteric Christian love, on one hand, and, on the other, Adolf von Harnack's studies of Gnostic influences on early Christianity helped to re-introduce, in a more obvious form, some remarkable themes into Russian literature, androgyny being one of them. The notions of religious love, androgyny as an original state of being as well as of the male-female opposition viewed as a cosmic principle surfaced in creative and critical literature alike. The present study discusses this aspect of Russian literary history of the period between 1900 and early 1920's when a consistent use was made by various, but mostly Symbolist, writers, of the male- female duality. Having originated in antiquity, this notion of the dichotomy of the feminine and the masculine survived in the esoteric tradition and informed European, as well as Russian, literature of the beginning of the century, by a distinct metaphysical rhetoric. The origins, literary applivations and the eventual demise of a fascinating Russian poetico-philosophical movement that gave character to the last idealistic, spiritualistic Romantic period in Russian literature are given a detailed analysis in the text of the dissertation. One of these polarities is that of the masculine and the feminine, which Gippius saw as inherently unequal and requiring transcendence. Perception of the inequality of "masculine" and "feminine" has its basis in social history and has begun to be explored in recent criticism, which can shed light on the attitudes underlying the poetry of Gippius. It is also significant that Gippius based her philosophy on an assumption that oppositions can be intergrated into a harmonious whole. The evolution toward the ideal of the androgyne which characterizes Gippius's poetry, therefore, is a model for the metaphysical integration which her philosophy advocated for opposite poles such as God and the devil, good and evil, physical and spiritual. The significance of the male-female opposition is, then, twofold: feminist criticism helps to place Gippius within the tradition of women writers now being re-examined in view of new perspectives; it further serves as a model for the potential intergration of oppositions which is the foundation of Gippius's philosophy. This study discusses the Russian literary tradition and its legacy for women writers, the origins of the Symbolist movement, and the attitudes and perceptions which characterize Gippius as both thinker and poet. The final four chapters treat the four predominant types of female images which emerge from Gippius's poetry: woman in traditional male roles, woman as abstraction, women from the religious tradition, and the androgynous figure. The manner in which Gippius treats each of these types contributes to a comprehensive picture of Gippius as artist, while serving as a model of the mystical vision of Christianity of which Gippius was a life-long proponent.
